Five Fandom Friday ~ Guilty Pleasures

So I fully intended to have another post up before this. I swear I did...but the Boyfriend got his desk in and needed help putting it together, and then we worked on his homework (coding!), and then we cleaned the game room/office and I reclaimed my desk! I finished my nerdy bulletin boards and put up a shelf and began filling that shelf with various nerdy nick nacks and then I started making a list of frames I need to buy for various posters and then it was time for my homework, dinner, and donkey kong! I fully intended for there to be a post this week, but running a two geek household caught up to me. Follow my blog with Bloglovin

This week's Five Fandom Friday is Guilty Pleasures. Five things that make you pause when telling people you're part of the Fandom. Oh boy...well here goes nothing. Here are my Five Fandom Guilty Pleasures.

1. Casual games

Ahem...so I am a huge video game player and take them super seriously sometimes (Ask the Boyfriend how I react when my headshot count is down in Borderlands or if he does better in Uncharted/Tomb Raider than me...). Sometimes I just want to play something super casual like cooking games for the Wii or hidden object games. Even time management games like Diner Dash will scratch that itch for me sometimes. I love the stupid Facebook games and play a number of them. It lets me unplug for a little while and not have to worry about solving complicated puzzles that could lead to death and dismemberment. Looking at you Guild Wars 2. The reason I have this listed as a guilty pleasure is the sheer amount of fallout I get when I tell people. For instance, I was looking at a cooking game for the Wii at a game store and this guy actually said to his friend "And that's what we call a fake geek and casual." Or a laugh and then "Oh that's cute! Do you play any real games?" I don't care. I love them and I'm not any less of a gamer for it, know what I mean?

2. Animated movies

OMG I love Disney and Pixar movies so much. I am currently planning a dress as your favorite Disney character themed party and am super excited. My own parents roll their eyes when I tell them how much I liked the latest Disney movie or animated movie and that they should buy it for my sister, who turns 5 tomorrow. Often there are complex messages in these movies though. Brave taught young girls to be independent and open minded. Frozen promoted bonds between sisters (I have three sisters so this movie hit me pretty hard). Big Hero 6 and Inside Out dealt with mental health. And Zootopia deals with racism. They're also very pretty, well done, and lots of fun. I feel like this is becoming less of a guilty pleasure in today's world, but for right now it's smack dab at number two on my list.

3. Musicals and old movies

Specifically from the 1930s to early 1960s. These were the days of Doris Day and Judy Garland and so many other wonderful actors, and were fantastically Technicolor. I love these old movies and own a few. I have a collection of musicals, a Doris Day collection, and a Judy Garland collection. They are a little over the top and sometimes its easy to see their age, but they are romantic and a lot of fun to watch.

4. Dinosaurs

I love dinosaurs and I will watch anything I can get my hands on about them. I also read every news article I come across about them. There is something that fascinates me about these creatures and their variety. Not enough to be a paleontologist, but still, I love Dinosaurs.

5. Paperbacks

No, not the paperbacks of the newest best selling fantasy/sci-fi/thriller/non-fiction books, even though I do love these. I'm talking the like $7 paperback mysteries and romances. These are some of my favorite books and I can't get enough of them. They're not serious and they can be super campy, if not awful, but there's something fun about a mystery that has a spunky sassy main character who solves a mystery while owning a tea shop or being part of knitting club or being a bounty hunter or a baker. Same with romances - does that scene make any sense at all? Nope and that thing really doesn't work like that, but they are fun! I especially like Jayne Castle's Harmony series, weird at times yes, but still a good sci-fi fantasy series.

There you go! My favorite guilty pleasure Fandoms. I should have one more post up tomorrow night. Thanks for stopping by and have a fantastic weekend.

  1. Hi Mariah, super fun to find another gaming blogger out there. I totally share your guilty pleasure about dinosaurs... I don't even feel guilty about it anymore. :P
Have you ever played ARK: Survival by any chance? I'm having a lot of fun at it and it's all about dinosaurs!

    1. Hi Rav,

I haven't, but I'm about to go look it up. Thanks for the suggestion!

  2. Musicals are the best thing ever. I think they're starting to make their way into the nerdy world, too.
