Five Fandom Friday: My Top 5 Favorite Retro Games

Hello everyone and welcome back to Five Fandom Fridays.

If you don't know what a Five Fandom Friday is, you are in luck. A Five Fandom Friday is a weekly blog list prompt written and hosted by The Nerdy Girlie. They're awesome and you should totally try it out.

This week's prompt is Favorite Retro Video Games. Oh boy...this one opens a can of worms, but here we go. First, I'm going with games that I'm super familiar with, so they might not be "retro" to some. Second, I'm a 90s baby so there are going to be a lot of 90s games. You have been warned. Alright, let's dive in.

5. Blazing Dragons

This game was and remains hilarious. It tells the story of the a young dragon, Flicker, who lives in Camelhot (get Camelhot...because dragons...nevermind) and is in love with the beautiful Princess Flame. In order to ask for her hand in marriage, he has to be a knight which he isn't. It is a point-and-click adventure/puzzle game that is inspired by Monty Python. It has a pretty stellar cast too. Playing it as a kid, I missed a lot of the humor. However, when my mom and dad bought me a new copy a few years ago, I nearly cried. This remains one of my go to retro games.

4. Suikoden

Growing up I was super lucky to have gamer parents. In fact one of my favorite memories is sitting downstairs with my mom after a particularly crappy day and night, and eating a no-bake cheesecake batter and playing this game with her. I couldn't have been more than 8. This game introduced me to JRPGs and shaped the gamer I am today. While relatively unknown, it will always hold a very big place in my heart and memories.

3. Tomb Raider

Okay...kind of cheating considering this was a huge series, but they're still my favorite. I have recently completed my collection. Muahahahahah....*ahem* Right. As most people know Tomb Raider tells the adventures of Lara Croft, a wealthy English aristocrat, who dabbles in tomb robbing, archaeology, ancient languages, looking kind of like a porn star, and having weirdly strong fingers. It's insane how strong her fingers are in these games. The games follow a basic formula, but each one tells its own story and delves into new cultures. These games are my guilty pleasure....like Nathan Drake, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park.

2. Crash Bandicoot

Another series, I know. I can't choose one. I just can't. Crash Bandicoot was a mainstay of my childhood and one of the games that taught me what completionism was. Looking at you time trials, gems, and ankhs. -_-  These games are really family friendly. No blood, no gore, humorous cartoon characters and easy to follow storylines. Yet they are surprisingly difficult and may cause you to doubt if you were meant to game. Or maybe that's just me. AND THE REMASTERED VERSIONS COME OUT NEXT MONTH AHHHHHH!!

1. Spyro

Yes, that little purple dragon makes me ridiculously happy. I'm actually replaying through these games right now. It's a great destresser and makes me feel awesome...until I fail, but whatever. I am partial to the first three games: Spyro the Dragon, Spyro: Ripto's Rage, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. These games are each stand alone, but they also build on each other. Like Crash Bandicoot, they're super family friendly and I have some great memories of playing with my sisters and parents. Also hiding away in the darkness until I got every single 100% that was offered.
